Meditation may seems intimidating if you've never done it before. But, since May is both Meditation Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, it is the perfect time to start practicing. Our Director of Operations, Oneika Mays, has 7 tips to help you get started:

1. Choose a comfortable seat

Whether it is sitting in a chair, on a sofa, or directly on the floor. Sit in a way that you feel supported. That might even mean laying down on your back.

2. Start small

Even 60 seconds of calm makes an impact on your mental health and wellbeing.

3. Count your breaths

This simple technique helps focus your mind on your breathing. Count each inhale and each exhale.

4. Come back when you wander

The point is to just try. To meditate is to simply notice when you are thinking and then come back to counting your breath. Allow your thoughts to come and go

5. Be kind to yourself

As your mind will wander, just be gentle with yourself. Don't worry about being perfect, or even getting it. By practicing, you are meditating.

6. Try to practice meditating at the same time everyday

This helps you get into the routine and helps create a healthy habit. Meditating takes practice. Every day will be different.

7. Find a community

Try a Meditation app. We like: Headspace & Insight Timer; but there are tons out there. Find group meditations in your area. Tag us on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter #TYPisMindful #MeditationTransformation

Inspired by #MeditationMonth...  Please consider donating to TYP today. We have a goal to raise $5,000 during May to support our trauma-sensitive yoga programs in Recovery and Criminal Justice Settings. Your donation will be doubled as part of the $50,000 Challenge Grant from the Wyss Foundation. But we need your help to reach that goal! Each dollar you donate could be DOUBLED in value!
